Marietta Kiwanis Club History

The local Marietta Kiwanis Club was founded on March 21, 1922, only seven years after the founding of the Kiwanis organization in 1915 by Allen S. Brown in Detroit.  Our first slogan was "We Trade" followed by "We Build" adopted at the Portland International Convention.

The Early Years
Historic street signs were placed around town in 1928
Organized a dental program for underprivileged children
Contributed a great amount of time and funds to the Marietta College Rowing Program

1950's
Helped purchase equipment to supply fluoridation to the City of Marietta water system
Built a fireplace and enclosed the Girl Scout shelter
Built a cabin at Camp Hervida
Funded an outdoor fireplace at the Children's Home

1960's
Participated in all phases of the Bantam League Program
Continued the dental care program for needy children
Awarded The 50th Vocational Guidance Scholarship Award
Erected a monument at Lookout Point commemorating the "Ordinance of 1787"
1964 Tree Planting Project - Members purchased and planted over 200 trees in Marietta

1970's
Sponsored the Marietta YMCA invitational swim meet
Continued maintenance of Lookout Park
Founded the Circle K Club at Marietta College

1980's
Women permitted to become members; July 7, 1987
Aided in opening the fitness trail at Indian Acres Park
Instrumental in developing West Muskingum Park - donated the flags of the states of the Northwest Territory for the bicentennial signing

1990's
Marietta Middle School Landscaping Project
Major Renovation of Lookout Point
Founded the Terrific Kids program at Harmar Elementary School
Numerous hours toward Young Children Priority One

2000 - 2010
Donated the Putnam Street Bridge historical plaques
Fitness trail at Indian Acres Park renewal project
Further development of youth organizations and services
Founded the Frontier High School Key Club
Built a picnic shelter by the Muskingum River near the Marietta College and Marietta High School boathouses

2010 - Today
Partner with the Washington County Library to put on Storybook Park
